Organic Soil, Insects, and Insect Bites on Leaves

11:08 PM

It is easy to grow herbal and herb plants. But just watering these like decorative plants will not assure the nutritional benefits that we expect to get from it. Herbs are just like vegetables. They need extra care to be able to supply good health.

Organic Soil Mix

Most herbal and herb plants need a good mixture of soil to be healthy. Garden soil is loose when wet, but too tight when dry. Adding sand loosens up soil - providing aeration and also good drainage to bring out excess water.  It is important to note though that there are some herbs which prefer just sand with compost. An example of this is chamomile. But regardless of soil mix, organic fertilizer should be applied monthly so as to give the herbs, herbals and vegetables that required proper nutrition. (Visit Plant Care for more information).

Insects

Insects are part of the food chain.  Although there are beneficial insects, non-beneficial insects need to be driven away to prevent infestation for the herbs to survive.  When I water my herbs, I add crushed Oregano or any minty herb. When I pour it on the leaves, stems and soil, I often see insects flying away.  Even herbs that do not need daily watering surely wouldn't mind a little water trickling down their leaves and stem just to get rid of insects affecting them. Oregano water can also be sprayed or be squeezed out from a recycled dish washing bottle.

Insect Bites on Leaves

Insects are obvious when you see these black hairy creatures lying down on the leaves comfortably or hiding under leaves by pairs or in groups. But some insects are trickier to spot because they are too small.  When non-beneficial insects are not very visible, their presence can manifest in the reaction of the leaves. Leaves with insects and eggs tend to have a different form as compared to others. These can curl up, have a different color, or may even stick together. Some stems may even have black spots on them.

If any of the leaves or stems have insects and eggs, just remove the infected parts so that the plant will survive.  Crushed oregano may also be applied directly on the plant to prevent further infestation. Any minty herb may be used as natural pesticide.  Also, the infested stems and leaves can be soaked in water overnight to kill the pests and eggs. These may be used as mint water for the plants the next day.

According to Dr. Shinya, author of The Enzyme Factor, there is no such thing as “harmful insects” since everything in this world is interconnected. This is why I retain leaves with insect bites (as long as it has no eggs) because the insect’s body, hands and feet, while in contact with the plant, leave  an enzyme called chitin-chitosan. This enzyme is found in the hard covering of an insect’s body which is the same enzyme found in the shell of shrimps and crabs. Chitin-Chitosan enzyme is an additional nutrient for herbs and also vegetables. It is a factor that is absent in edible plants that are contaminated with chemicals and pesticides.

Gardening is challenging with the presence of insects.  But it is good to know that insects, whether helpful or termed as “harmful” have such a valuable, nutritious and delicious contribution.

Make Herbal Gardening Your Workout!

9:50 PM

As a gardener, I move to and fro in my herbal garden for my regular chores like –

1.    Lifting a pail of water with bended knees (to protect the back);
2.   Getting water from the pail with a dipper (tabo) then pouring water thoroughly in plants;
3.   Squatting and semi-squatting to remove aphids, pests, old leaves, or add organic fertilizer;
4.   Carrying pots with soil and plants, vegetable wastes, leaves, and soil for composting (Plant Care) and;
5.   Filling up pots with soil using a trowel then transplanting stems.

All these actions firm the arms, legs, hips and shape the waistline.  Studies have shown that a person weighing 150 lbs. would burn 272 calories in an hour. This automatically is an enjoyable workout!

Start your own garden. Get your Herbal and Herbs from https://herbalandherbs.wordpress.com/.

And as I  remove old leaves or even just move leaves accidentally or purposely, the scent of peppermint, Java and Japanese mints, Rosemary, Kuchai Leek, Basil and other herbs exude all over my herbaland! Natural fragrance and a good supply of Oxygen for me!

Unlike other exercises where eating is preferred after the workout, for gardening it would be better to eat breakfast first. Plant lovers tend be carried away in the garden for more than two hours, oblivious to time! I’ve learned my lesson that’s why once I wake up, I eat  breakfast using my herbs.

Among of those I eat are Ashitaba leaves and Gotu Kola. For tea, I drink steeped Tarragon, Mint, Balbas Pusa, or Damong Maria for circulation and all the good things that they offer.  For breakfast I toast bread and top it with different kinds ofy herbs like Oregano, Basil, Dill, Kuchai, Basil etc. mixed with olive oil, cheese and garlic. I also make an all-herb pizza with tomato sauce and freshly-picked spinach with Tarragon vinaigrette! On some days, I eat boiled sweet potato (Camote), banana fries or boiled Cassava (Camoteng Kahoy) which are highly nutritious!  I also drink my homemade Aloe Vera Alkaline Syrup and Tablea. Tablea is from 100% cocoa or cacao beans which really gives energy and strengthens bones with its manganese and magnesium content. With all these, I am ready to get to work!

I notice that once I start doing my rounds, I start to perspire and though the morning sun aggravates the heat, it’s a blessing because sunshine provides Vitamin D which helps absorb calcium for strong bones, strengthen the immune system, and prevent diseases like colon cancer.  It also helps eliminates toxins and keep your skin healthy.

May all these healthy benefits inspire you more to care for your garden and enjoy the fruits of your workout!

Eat Your Herbal and Herbs Fresh!

8:41 PM

Fresh herbals mean more enzymes, minerals and vitamins. These strengthen the body so the body can heal itself.

Ashitaba/Tomorrow Leaf

Two (2) dark leaves a day followed by drinking water little by little maintains good health. To maximize the benefits, do not drink coffee, tea or anything with caffeine within 4 hours. This will help in regular bowel movement which will clean the colon.

This herbal helps normalize cholesterol levels, normalize high or low blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, asthma, kidney, diarrhea, vomiting, fertility problem, rheumatism, hemorrhoids among others. Ashitaba contains Vitamin B12 that promotes the immune system so as to fight off serious disorders like cancer. So if there are health concerns, 2 leaves in the morning and 2 leaves at night is advisable.

Two cancer patients shared with me that Ashitaba is a big help to maintain their normal blood platelets. Also, one dengue victim with low platelet increased her platelet and got cured one hour after eating 2 dark green leaves.

Ashitaba came from Hachijo Island, Japan. Ashitaba is also called Gynura because it has a genus originating from Indonesia and Malaysia. It is also called Tomorrow Leaf because once you get a leaf, a small bud appears the next day. You can also mix it in your food as a vegetable.

Customers relieved of ailments would buy again and give Ashitaba as gifts. One customer was so happy to share to me that he gave an 86-year old with a ashen leg due to diabetes. After eating the fresh leaves (4 leaves for healing), his leg went back to normal.

Basil

Fresh basil helps loosen stuffy nose due to allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. It relieves cough as well. I put it in my toast.

Gotu Kola

The traditional name here in the Philippines for Gotu Kola is Takip Kohol because its leaf’s size is enough to cover a small edible shell called kohol. As soon as I wake up, I eat seven (7) leaves of this together with two (2) Ashitaba leaves and drink water sip by sip to improve absorption. (Healing Powers of Water by Dr. Ramaiah).

This is good for the memory and youthfulness, the heart, psoriasis, the prostate, cellulite and varicose veins and many more.

Java Mint/Spear Mint

Mint helps loosen mucus and relieves cough. This can be eaten for fresh breath or even flavor chocolate, candies, ice cream and even cookies.

Lettuce

This is a leafy vegetable popularly used for salad or in sandwiches. The Romaine, a dark green variety, and Lolla Rossa, the red and green variety, is rich in Pro-vitamin A and Vitamin C, silicon, sulfur, chlorine and Vitamin B complex. Sulfur and chlorine are called lung cleansers.

This is a product of hydroponics. My husband, Romy, planted the lettuce in a small makeshift pot with organic soil over another makeshift pot with water. As the lettuce grows, some of the roots protrude out of the soil and go to the water, maintaining its hydration.

Peppermint

Fresh leaves can be eaten as relief for cough, colds, headache. And yes, it freshens breath.
